2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) – Mini Beachcomber Concept

MINI Beachcomber Concept

MINI Beachcomber Concept

2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) – Mini Beachcomber Concept: The Mini seems to be an auto designer’s sand box—a starting point to form an endless parade of vehicles from the same basic raw material. For nearly a decade Mini has wowed crowds with ever more versatile versions of the iconic not-so-micro-anymore machine since BMW re-launched the marque in 2001. Retaining the styling cues that make the Mini so recognizable, the automaker has pulled, stretched and reconfigured the basic Mini from a single model into a nearly complete line of pint-sized fun machines.

Since 2001, Mini has dropped the top to create a convertible, extended the cargo area to bring us the Mini Clubman, lifted it and added four-wheel-drive in a Mini Crossover concept, transformed it into a Mini Coupe concept, and now they are at it again with the Beachcomber concept. As with the Mini Clubman, the Mini Beachcomber concept touches on previous Austin Mini renditions of the aptly named little car by invoking the styling of the Austin Mini Moke which was in production from 1964-1993.

Like the Austin Mini Moke, the Mini Beachcomber concept is an open air vehicle designed for visual, as well as on and off road fun. With four-wheel-drive, four seats and a rarity in Mini vehicles—the ability to get in and out of the vehicle from an exit adjacent to each of those seating positions. As a crossover rather than a body-on-frame 4×4, the Beachcomber should retain the sporty fun of its brethren but continue the fun off pavement as well. A removable hardtop and doors in addition to what appears to be an all weather interior allow the Mini Beachcomber to be enjoyed no matter what the weather or sport.

The beach buggy styling is reminiscent of an old fiberglass Meyers Manx, the same styling that has found its way into the Jeep Renegade concept and the Hummer HX in recent years, only this time in Mini-ature. While the styling is wild and elicited scads of “oohs” and “ahs” for previous open-air teasers from auto show attendees, the design is not practical for production or from a safety standpoint (think side impact), which most likely relegates the Beachcomber as just another designer’s castle made of sand.

2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) – GMC Granite Concept

2010 GMC Granite Concept

2010 GMC Granite Concept

2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) – GMC Granite Concept: GMC unveils the Granite Concept, a vehicle completely different from any of their current offerings, hinting at a possible change of philosophy and a glimmer of hope in GMs future as the embattled giant continues to redefine itself.

Changing the face of a company is no easy task, especially one that has been set in stone. GMC has been associated with big, burly trucks and enormous, elephantine SUVs for so long, it’s nearly impossible to imagine them building anything else. So perhaps it’s no mistake that GMC decided to name their new concept vehicle, which if produced would be the smallest vehicle in their lineup, “Granite.”

The Granite Concept is a design study attempting to pack everything you like about GMC into a stylish and handy carrying case—that you can drive. The Granite is stylish, with its unmistakable GMC front grille, a front clip that means business and angular side lines that start from the rear of the front wheel well and disappear into the line of the D-pillar. The side mounted French doors are also a nice touch that would make lading the granite a breeze. It’s definitely a step in the right direction for GMC.

Part of what makes a GMC a GMC and not just a rebadged Chevrolet is the amenities such as a well appointed interior, premium sound system, and high tech gadgets. It’s easy enough to fit those items into a smaller package, and they have, but what about GMC utility?

GMC boasts that with the flipping/folding seats, a mountain bike could be transported in the Granite with the tail gate closed. That represents the GMC utility you’ve come to expect, although on a much smaller scale. However, the designers state that the Granite is designed for young people on the go—people who are much more likely to load up their vehicle with friends and gear than tow boats and haul lumber.

Well, that kinda sounds like the market for another motorized box on wheels we know of—the one that first made it hip to be square—the Scion xB. Compared to the current xB, the Granite is actually six inches shorter than with a one inch longer wheel base. It’s also an inch wider and four inches shorter than the xB.

Throw in some GMC amenities and it would seem GMC has outboxed the box. We hope the Granite gets chiseled into a production version, because we’d like to see a box that rocks for once instead of a box of rocks.

2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) – 2011 Ford Focus

2011 Ford Focus 5-door hatchback

2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) – 2011 Ford Focus: Ford unveiled the 2011 Ford Focus at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show as part of their ONE Ford strategy, a one platform for all markets philosophy. In the past, Ford has left us pining for what we couldn’t have in the Europe while we were forced to choke down what many viewed as substandard second cousins to their lust worthy European counterparts. Ford says not so this time around claiming that the 2011 Ford Focus will be virtually identical in all markets and be able to share 80-percent of their parts.

The new Focus will be available in either a five-door hatchback, or a four-door sedan. European styling replaces the bland and featureless-sided outgoing model and is even more evident in the hatchback version which verges on hot hatch territory. A wide mouth lower grille and an upper grille with a chrome strip horizontally dividing the grille into two also adds a dash of panache and a hint of performance missing from the current generation.

You can go ahead and judge this book by its cover, too, it looks just as good on the inside as it does on the outside. A cockpit inspired instrument panel replaces the mostly linear 2009 dash, while more heavily bolstered seats hint at improved comfort and support, and interior material quality appear to be greatly improved as well.

The North American market 2011 Ford Focus will be powered by an all new 2.0-liter direct injection (DI) engine with twin cam variable cam timing (VCT). Ford states the new engine delivers 20 more horsepower while offering a 10-percent increase in fuel economy over the current 2.0-liter Duratec engine. The 2.0 DI VCT engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic, and we couldn’t help but to notice the “S” on the gear selector, is that a sport mode? Let’s play.

The 2011 Ford Focus competes with the Nissan Versa, Suzuki SX4, and Hyundai Elantra. It is slated to begin simultaneous production in Europe and North America later this year and hit dealer lots early in 2011.

Mini Moke History

1965 Austin Mini Moke

1965 Austin Mini Moke

The Mini Moke was introduced in 1959 by British Motor Corporation (BMC) as a project codenamed “The Buckboard” a potential military vehicle which eventually became known as the Mini Moke. Mini comes from the car it shared parts with and Moke is an outdated word for donkey.

The chief selling point of the Mini Moke was its lightweight construction. BMC promoted the Mini Moke as a vehicle capable of being dropped into position by parachute and also being able to carry four soldiers as well as being light enough to be carried by the same four soldiers. Small wheels and low clearance translated into a lot of carrying needing to be done so the Mini Moke never drew much military interest. In 1964, BMC abandoned trying to sell the Moke as a military vehicle and decided to pursue the civilian market instead.

Thanks to the success of the Mini, the Moke quickly obtained cult status that has carried on through today. Further spurring their popularity, Mokes were commonly used as rental vehicles atmany popular resort islands. Tourists with fond memories of driving the Mini Mokes on their vacations sought them out once they returned home.

The Moke enjoyed a production run that lasted until 1993 and took place in three countries: Britain, Australia and Portugal. Since it shared drivetrain components with the Mini which was in production until 2000, parts were easily obtainable. Its simplistic design has made reproduction parts easy to manufacture, and several manufactures have made the Moke available in kit form.

MINI is now owned by BMW and has introduced a concept vehicle at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) called the Beachcomber that shares many Mini Moke characteristics, primarily the open air MINI look.

2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) Preview – 2011 GMC Acadia Denali

2011 GMC Acadia Denali

2011 GMC Acadia Denali

2010 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) Preview – 2011 GMC Acadia Denali: GMC will add the Denali treatment to the 2011 GMC Acadia. The GMC Acadia introduced in 2007 as an entry level crossover for the “professional grade” brand will be getting the anything but entry level treatment as GMC pulls all the stops on the features that make the Denali line so popular.

Exterior features making the 2011 GMC Acadia Denali stand out from the entry level Acadia include: Denali specific front and rear fascias, side body cladding, Denali badges and chrome exhaust tips. The 2011 GMC Acadia Denali will ride on six-spoke 20” dual tone chrome wheels. The Acadia Denali will be available in five colors: Quicksilver Metallic, Summit White, Carbon Black, Red Jewel Tintcoat and White Diamond Tricoat.
Inside, the Denali experience is conveyed through temperature controlled leather seats, a leather wrapped steering wheel, wood grain finish on the dash and center console, dual sunroof, and an upscale sound system.

Available options available on the 2011 GMC Acadia Denali are driver, and front and rear passenger climate control, a nav system, Bluetooth capability, rear DVD entertainment system, a backup camera, enhanced sound system, XM radio, eight-way power adjustable driver seat with memory feature, premium sound system with USB connection and remote start.

Powering the 2011 GMC Acadia Denali is the same 3.6-L direct injection V-6 with fuel saving variable valve timing (VVT) that powers the rest of the Denali line. Getting the power to the front wheels (FWD) is the standard six-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) model is available as well. The 3.6-L V-6 puts out 288 hp @ 6,300 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 rpm helping to give the 2011 GMC Acadia Denali a class leading 5,200-lb towing capacity, yet allows the Acadia Denali to achieve 17 mpg city and 24 mpg hwy in FWD models and 16 mpg and 24 mpg in AWD packages.

The Acadia is a unibody crossover based on the Lambda platform shared with the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Travers and is designed with third row seating allowing it to accommodate up to 8 passengers, however the third row is best left to smaller passengers and children.

The GMC Denali competes with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Mazda CX-9 as well as its GM siblings the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse.

Honda recalls 7,600 Ridgelines for Potential Fire Hazard

2007 Honda Ridgeline RTL

2007 Honda Ridgeline RTL

American Honda Motor Company announced it is recalling 7,600 Ridgeline trucks from the 2006-07 model years.

Honda has stated that a wiring harness connector for the blower motor in the heating and air conditioning system located above the passenger foot well may come loose and become prone to kicking by the passenger.

Kicking the connector may cause it to be damaged which could result in the connector or the wire insulation to heat and melt, creating a fire hazard.

The safety recall should begin in February when owners of the affected Ridgelines can have the wiring harness inspected for free. If the connector is damaged, it will be replaced at no charge. All models involved in the recall will have a protective cover installed to protect the connector from further incidental contact.

If you have questions about the recall you can contact American Honda Motor Company at 1-800-999-1009 or checkout the recall bulletin.

Kia Is Going Racing

Kia unveils their new racing program

Kia unveils their new racing program

Kia dropped a bomb on those attending their scheduled press conference at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday, November 3rd. The automaker that introduced the Scion-fighting, customizable Soul last year is apparently not stopping the barrage on the aftermarket it began last year by entering the bolt-on personalization market, but is now throwing the gauntlet down in the performance segment as well. Kia announced Tuesday it would be entering two Kia Fortes into the 2010 GRAND-AM KONI Sports Car Challenge Series in the Street Tuner (ST) class. The two Fortes are a joint effort between Kia and the Kinetic Group and will be driven by Andy Lally and Nic Jönsson who have both previously raced in the GRAND-AM Rolex series.

Kia chose the Grand-Am Street Tuner Class because they felt the demographics most closely matched the market the Forte is aimed toward. The hope is the racing team will demonstrate to their target audience how competitive the Forte can be and introduce others to the performance side of Kia as well.

Both drivers have had many recent successes in GRAND AM racing and should provide a competitive edge to the new team.
